Do you have any experience with self-injury? What steps did you take to overcome it if you did?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do have experience with self-injury… In fact, I have lots of experience with it… I began harming myself when I was 12 years old, and have struggled with it ever since (I am now 23) There have been times that I have been able to stop for a time… The thing that helped me most at one point was Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) It’s a program developed by a psychiatrist, Marsha Linehan… It incorporates understanding what the emotional side and the logical side of the brain is… Then it helps to combine the two so you can think rationally and not make impulsive decisions, or to over-analyze something a go from there… Since I was in the program only a short time, I didn’t get all out of it that I could’ve…
There are also other great ways to keep from harming yourself… Distraction is a big thing… You can distract yourself by reading a book, watching a movie, or, my favorite one, playing with a child in your family… You could exercise… It releases the same endorphins that SI releases… If you feel that there is no other way than to feel that pain, there are other, safer ways to feel the pain… Hold an ice cube to the place you want to cut, or take a really cold shower… You could also snap a rubber band against your wrist every time you start to have feelings of harming yourself (as long as you know when to stop snapping…) These will give you some pain sensation, but won’t hurt you or leave scars…
Of course, you could always try talking to someone about how your feeling and why you feel the need to SI… If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your family or friends (which is where I would recommend starting at) there are always crisis numbers you can call… One such number is SAFE-Self Abuse Finally Ends… The number is 1-800-dont cut… (Very original, I know…) You could also hop online and find crisis websites… One that I’ve found quite helpful is called Recover Your Life… www.recoveryourlife.com
I hope this has helped some!!! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me!!!
  1. My 8 yr old daughter was stabbing herself with a pointy necklace & a pencil at school, she was also biting herself. she was also rapping the necklace around her neck choking herself (she left a pretty bad red ring around her neck) telling the other students and teachers she was trying to kill herself that she wanted to die. she is in a hospital now getting help. I understand the concern with the choking part, i am concerned with all of it but the stabbing & biting doesnt neccessarily constitute trying to kill herself, they werent objects that could accomplish that. and i have caught her at home biting herself before when she gets upset about something. it makes me wonder if she is on the path of self injury. I dont want to make something out of nothing, but should i be worried. i was suicidal for a while in my teenage years but i am ok now for the most part. i dont recall ever wanting to hurt myself other than that so i dont know much about self injury just what i have seen in movies and read here.
  2. I began harming myself in the 5th grade. By using the eraser of a pencil. I would rub until the skin came off. I started cutting with a razor blade in the 8th grade and continued up until I was about 31 years old. I would cut here and there until the age of 35 and then something inside of me stopped. I am as I say in remission because I have had no thoughts of harming myself since. I am on all medication required and have had nothing but positive days. However, lately the stress with owning my own business and a partner who has a mental illness as well has put me over the edge with anger issues and I feel myself wanting to cut. But all I have to do is look at the scars on my arms and talk to my therapist and it seems to go away. Suicide has never entered my mind. I used to cut do to negative talk and feeling hopelessness and anger.
  3. I began self injuring about 6 years ago, after finding out that my daughters (ages 4 and 8 at the time) were beingmolested by there 11 year old cousin. I also developed anoexia which landed me in the hospital for two months at a time twice. Now, I self injure whenever my emotions get too overwhelming for me to handle.
