Is it true that you can’t drink when you have bp?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can’t … or ‘shouldn’t’?
I’m not sure if you know this or not, but I like wine. It’s pretty. And shiny. And tasty. And sometimes sparkly. (I really like sparkly wine) Now ‘technically’ I CAN lift a glass of wine to my mouth and take a nice tasty sip (or 5). But SHOULD I?
To be honest, it really depends on who you’re talking to. One doctor of mine told me he’d rather I popped a Xanex than have a drink. But then I read articles like this, where they say it may actually be okay, so I think eh… I’m good right? Well then I go and read an article like this that suggests risk of suicide is higher in bipolars who abuse alcohol than in non bipolars.
Way to make it confusing!
HOWEVER, in my own experiences …after all, that’s what we are here for right?… I have found that drinking during a depressive episode is not a good idea. I’ve also found that drinking in general, tends to be a bit more touchy for me than other people. I can neither confirm nor deny if this is a bipolar thing. Could just be a me thing. Could also just be the situation I’m confronted with while drinking.
Do I flip out and lose control every time a have a few drinks? Not really. At least not any more than the average Joe.
One thing I have found interesting though…when I do drink…my mood does sometimes go down for a few days after. I’m not sure if this is a coincidence, but I’m guessing, taking into account my doctors advice, that it’s not.
Also, another thing you need to take into consideration is the medications you are on. Some medications will state that it is not safe to drink while taking it. It’s best to speak with your doctor or a pharmacist if this is the case. Certain medications can pose a great health risk when taken with alcohol.
So CAN you drink alcohol when you have bp? Absolutely, if you can lift a glass and take a sip, you most definitely can drink.
But SHOULD you drink alcohol when you have bp? In my opinion … I think  it’s okay in moderation. And I’m not talking about a stable person’s moderation…. I’m talking about once in a great while having a glass or two, but only if you are stable. If you are especially unstable, I’d stay as far away from it as possible. Using alcohol to self medicate is NEVER good!
And, as always, I would suggest speaking with your doctor about it before making a final decision.
I’m not sure if this was helpful or not. But if you’d like further information here are a few sites you can visit:
(And thank goodness you didn’t ask if I drink while having bp….I like wine….)
