Social Anxiety Support Groups in my area …

Hello, I have recently been discharged from a hospital and have severe social anxiety. Very rarely go out side by myself. The state I live in has very limited resources for things of this nature. Therapy don’t work for me and there is just a few support groups and they tend to be geared to other things. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Social anxiety is anxiety (emotional discomfort, fear, apprehension, or worry) about social situations, interactions with others, and being evaluated or scrutinized by other people.

AKA … social anxiety kind of sucks. And since Bipolar Disorder happens to be the “Buy One Get Five Free Illness”, it is not uncommon for us to suffer from this disorder as well. Now as those with Social Anxiety do NOT like being in social situations, it’s quite difficult to find an actual, physical support group. Some people would argue that due to the type of disorder this is, face-to-face support groups may not even be of much help. I’m not sure I agree with that, but it was obvious in my search that not many people hold these types of meetings.

When you are having difficulty finding the proper support group for your specific illness, I suggest looking outside the scope of face-to-face support and possibly getting involved in an online support group/forum. In my opinion this would be an excellent way to interact with other people suffering from the same problems as you, while at the same time, avoiding the situations you hate the most. (ie: Social Interaction)

I even ran across some groups where they have “phone meet ups” similar to a conference call. You can’t see anyone, but you still get the comfort of each others voices. I’m not sure if that would lessen the anxiety, but it might be worth a try.

I’m not going to lie, I really hate not having all the answers and being of little help, but this topic was quite difficult. So I have pulled together a list of online resources and support groups that you may want to look into as an alternative option to face-to-face therapy.

Hope this has helped at least a little bit!

  1. Yes Bipolar definitely is the Buy One Get Five Free Illnesses disorder. I have Rapid cycling bipolar II, anxiety, and I think ADD predominantly inattentive. Life sucks. Luckily I have a great family.
