What are some of the risk factors/causes of bipolar?

What are some of the risk factors/causes of bipolar???

So, pretty much everyone on this site has bipolar or knows someone with bipolar, right??? Ok, I’m sure not EVERYONE… There’s probably some people who are just looking to know more about bipolar, or who are treating bipolar, or whatever… But it’s all about bipolar here!!!

Anyways, there are many causes and risk factors of bipolar… One big thing that seems to be the main cause of bipolar (in most people… Not all!!!) is genetics… You are more likely(80-90%) to have bipolar if one of your siblings, parents, or other blood relatives has bipolar or depression… Scientists aren’t entirely sure why this is… They have done studies with identical twins and if one of them gets bipolar, the other is more likely to get it, but it’s not certain… It’s simply a possibility… Bipolar affects both sexes and all socioeconomical societies in America equally (great, the illness itself isn’t prejudice, only the people are!!!)

Genetics is the most thought of risk factor… But there are others… Some of the predisposed risk factors could be attributed to genetics, but it’s not yet proven… One is an imbalance of some naturally occurring chemicals, called neurotransmitters, in the brain… Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember one dern thing about from high school Anatomy, so I have no idea what synapses or endogenous chemicals are… I had to look it up, and basically neurotransmitters are chemicals in your body that control a lot of happenings in your body… The ones most associated with mental illnesses are Dopamine and Serotonin… If they are off balance, they could cause illnesses such as Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, and yes, bipolar…

Ok, now that the science lesson is out of the way, there are a few other ‘genetical’ risk factors (don’t worry, no anatomy here!!!) One is an imbalance in some hormones of the body, and another is a biological difference in the brain… Still, scientists aren’t too sure why, but this is what studies are showing!!! Bipolar usually presents itself between 15 and 30, although mostly around 25…

Ok, now onto outside risk factors… Your environment plays a (supposed) big role in getting bipolar… For example, the loss of a loved one, abuse, or too much alcohol and street drug use… Pretty much any kind of high stress that lasts can affect you…

One more cause (then I swear I’m done!!!) is certain medical conditions and some medicines (although I couldn’t find which ones, so if you know of any, please let us know!!!)

Ok, now that I’ve talked your ear off (well, your eyes anyway…) feel free to tell us if you know of any other causes or risk factors!!! I know I would love to hear them!!!

God bless

  1. I was once told by a Pdoc that the Provigil that i was prescribed for a sleep disorder may have helped bring on my bp. ??????

  2. I’ve acutally never heard of that medicine before… But I do know sleep disorder pills can cause a lot of problems if you’re not on the right one!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
